Syncing your home folder

31 08 2009

There are two types of syncing.

  1. The type of syncing that occurs when you login and logout of your computer
  2. The type of syncing that you need to do manually be clicking on the two houses on your menu bar.

This post is about the manual sync.  Here’s what to do and not to do.

1. Don’t wait until your about to leave for the day to do a sync.

  • The manual sync can take up to 1 hour so it is best to sync in the morning.

2. It is best to sync while you are not using your computer and all applications are not in use (sync while you’re at a meeting or lunch).

3. But, you CAN sync while you are using your computer.  In this case,  you may get some sync error messages.  Here is what to do when you get them.

4. Any file that is in use (currently open , like a word document or iphoto library) can’t by synced.  If a file is open during sync you will get a sync error that looks like this.

5. If the sync program can’t figure out which file is the correct file to use as the “master”, then it will ask you what to do. This is called a sync conflict and here is what the sync conflice window looks like.

6. Notice both windows are blue or selected.  You want to click on the window titled “On This Computer”.  Now the left window should be blue or selected and the right window should be white.  It will look like this.
